How to Challenge a Limiting Belief

A simple four-step process to question a belief that may be holding you back — and replace it with something more useful.

You don’t need to force yourself to “think positive.” The goal is simply to look at the belief more clearly.

STEP 1 · NOTICE

What are you telling yourself?

Write the belief exactly as it appears in your mind. Don’t make it sound better or more reasonable.

STEP 2 · QUESTION

Is it always true?

Create a little distance from the belief by answering these questions.

STEP 3 · LOOK FOR EVIDENCE

What does your experience actually show?

Look for real moments, facts, or experiences that don’t fully fit the belief. You’re not trying to prove the opposite — just notice where the belief may not tell the whole story.

STEP 4 · REWRITE

Make the belief more useful — and believable.

Your new belief doesn’t need to sound inspiring. It only needs to be more accurate, flexible, and useful.

NEXT STEP

A belief changes through evidence, not repetition alone.

You don’t have to convince yourself of the new belief today. Look for small opportunities to act as if it might be true. Each new experience gives your mind more evidence to work with.
